Minister for Medical Research Pru Goward said quality medical research leads to a greater knowledge, understanding and better health outcomes for the people of NSW.
"The 2016-17 Budget continues to invest in vital medical research which will fundamentally change the way health care is delivered in the future, with a focus on individualised treatments and prevention," Goward said.
Key health and medical research initiatives in the 2016-17 NSW Budget include:
- $44.5 million for the Medical Research Support Program to support 15 independent medical research institutes
- $9.75 million over four years to advance new health care technology and devices through the Medical Devices Fund and other commercialisation initiatives
- $7 million to embed translational research into clinical practice in NSW hospitals and LHDs through the Health Services Research Support Program including the Translational Research Grants Scheme
- $6 million to unlock the causes of some of the most debilitating genetic conditions through the Genomics Collaborative Grants Program
- $3 million for our three medical cannabis clinical trials for children with severe drug resistant epilepsy, people in palliative care and people with chemotherapy induced nausea and vomiting
- $2.5 million to support the development of the next generation of medical researchers in NSW, through the Early-Mid Career Fellowship Scheme and PhD Scholarships.
